With the winter months approaching, cold and flu season will soon hit many of us. Acupuncture can be very helpful in balancing the body and boosting the immune system. Getting regular acupuncture treatments may be the ticket for you to stay healthy and strong this season.
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine has been around for thousands of years to effectively diagnose, treat and prevent illness. Chinese Medicine organizes the body along longitudinal pathways called meridians. These meridians correspond to specific organs, nerves, blood vessels, muscle groups, and connective tissue. Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of ultra fine, sterile, single use needles at specific points along these meridians. The needles act to increase our body’s innate self-healing, enhance immunity, balance emotions, and relieve pain.
More and more research has revealed that acupuncture can regulate immune function. In Chinese Medical theory, “Wei Qi” or “Defensive Qi” is located at the exterior surface of the body and provides the initial protection against foreign or pathogenic factors, such as viruses. When “Wei Qi” is strong, pathogenic factors cannot penetrate the body. People who suffer from chronic, frequent colds and flus likely have weak defensive Qi. Things that can cause the defensive qi to become weak are: overwork, irregular diet, emotional stress, chronic illness or a combination of all of these. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can be very effective in building this defensive energy in our bodies. It can be used as an effective preventative measure. For prevention it is recommended doing frequent treatments before the season hits. It can also be used during the illness to help alleviate symptoms, shorten the course of the illness and prevent complications.
